What A Pong!

Sickened motorists describe ‘unbelievable’ stench as rotting whale carcass driven along motorway in middle of day

A motorist has told of his shock after witnessing the horrific sight – and smell – of a rotting giant sperm whale carcass being driven along a Kent motorway in broad daylight.

Mark Stephens, 41, who took pictures of the animal as it was transported down the A2 towards Canterbury in Kent, described the ‘unbelievable’ stench coming from the dead mammal.

He added: ‘There was… this massive whale with its head and tail chopped off, blood and guts dropping off the back and everything.

‘The smell was unbelievable. I’ve worked near an abattoir and that smelled bad, but this was something else.’

The body was being transported to a landfill site to be disposed of after lying on the beach for several days.

Mr Stephens added to the Telegraph: ‘It was incredible really. You would have thought, given the state it was in, they would have transported it at night. I don’t think I’ll see anything like that again.’

The 50ft whale died when it became stranded near Seasalter on the north Kent coast a week ago.
